Amending Amendments

November 8th, 2006 by Mike Vasilinda

Now here’s a bit of irony for you… on a day when Florida voters approved every constitutional amendment on the ballot… a total of six… they also approved an amendment that will make it harder to do that in the future. Amendment three raises the bar… saying all future constitutional amendments must be approved by 60% of the voters instead of a simple majority. The amendment was championed by the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Vice President Mark Wilson says that should put an end to amendments like the bullet train and the ban on confinement pens for pregnant pigs that were approved in the past

“I think the… irony or not… I think the bottom line is the voters spoke loud and clear. They want their constitution protected from pigs and trains and that’s what they did.”

One more ironic note: If amendment three had to live up to its own standard, it would have failed. It was approved by fewer than 60 percent of the voters.
