Cannon Discusses Economic Prospects

March 3rd, 2009 by Mike Vasilinda

The man slated to take over the House in 2010, Rep. Dean Cannon of Winter Park. This year he is in charge of stimulating the states economy. Cannon notes Florida has much less of a budget deficit than other big states like California or New York, but he says because most of Floridas revenue comes from the sales tax, the state must find a way to motivate consumer spending.

We need to figure out how you focus money on areas like education and health care, in the classroom in education, and for patient care in the medical context, and recognize that we have less money, Cannon said. Our budget has contracted 10 percent while the stock market has contracted almost 30 percent. Compared to Wall Street, Florida is, again, not in as bad a shape as some other big economic indicators are. Weve got to be really careful.

On the list of ideas to generate construction is a plan to make it shorter and easier for builders and developers to get permits.
