Michael conjures up painful memories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThinking of those three or four hours we spent in the tub sweating with the power off waiting for it to pass,\u201d said Stokes.<\/p>\n<p>And when the winds subsided\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole world changed,\u201d said Stokes.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest hit was to Mathew\u2019s tree farming company, Neal Land & Timber in plots, which was a total loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt’s just getting more and more expensive everyday it seems like, but we’re trying to go forward and get good growth out of our trees,\u201d said Stokes.<\/p>\n<p>In all, his company owns 45,000 acres across six counties.<br \/>\n\u201cWe’re well up over $30 million worth of lost timber on the stump,\u201d said Stokes.<\/p>\n<p>The timber industry took a $1.3 billion hit from Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other crops, timber is essentially uninsurable.<\/p>\n<p>Even worse for many it’s a living 401K.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI’ve talked to a lot of manifested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of people that are going to be jobless once everything is cleaned up,\u201d said Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Mathew believes government reimbursement could help, but told us at the end of the day there\u2019s no silver bullet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe’re just going to have to work through it and do the best we can,\u201d said Stokes.<\/p>\n<p>Mathew estimates replanting and regrowth will take between 12 and 15 years, but it could take even longer depending on what level of assistance the federal government agrees to provide.<\/p>\n<p>Mathew added while the road ahead will certainly be challenging, he\u2019s hopeful things will turn out alright in the end.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s said he\u2019s just blessed he and his family made it out of the storm
