A hearing tonight by the Michigan Senate Oversight committee will hear testimony on election irregularities. Some GOP members still want legislatures in contested states to order their electors to vote for President Trump, and as Mike Vasilinda tells us, the same thing nearly happened here in Florida during the 2000 recount.<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\nIt was a rare sight 20 years ago. Dudley Goodlet (R-Ft. Myers) was the rules chair and lead the charge.<\/p>\n\u201cThis power is conferred upon the legislatures of the states by the Constitution of the United States\u201d Goodlet told colleagues on the House floor.<\/p>\nAt the time, Democrats, including newly elected Dan Gelber of Miami, argued the effort was an attempt to steal the election.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flanews.com\/still1202_00017\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-64323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Still1202_00017-200x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.flanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Still1202_00017-200x113.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.flanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Still1202_00017-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.flanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Still1202_00017.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe will be disenfranchising every single voter\u201d predicted gelber.<\/p>\nThe House approved the resolution along party lines, 79 to 41.<\/p>\nBut the Senate took a much more cautious approach, delaying a vote until it was absolutely necessary to preserve the state\u2019s electoral vote. John McKay was the President at the time.<\/p>\n“I was very concerned Florida’s actions might be used in the future as justification to certify votes for one Presidential candidate or another\u201d McKay told us by phone.<\/p>\nAnd what nearly happened here 20 years ago likely would have set a precedent for today\u2019s legislatures in contested states.<\/p>\nDan Gelber is now the Mayor of Miami Beach.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flanews.com\/still1202_00014\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-64320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Still1202_00014-200x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.flanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Still1202_00014-200x113.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.flanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Still1202_00014-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.flanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Still1202_00014.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>\u201cHad the Senate acted, I think it would be something thats would not be just\u00a0 <\/span>bad precedent, but there would always be an urge, from one side or the other,\u00a0 <\/span>to impose its will over the will of the voters\u201d says Gelber today.<\/p>\nAnd The window for any state legislatures to vote is narrowing.
