Jimmy Ryce Act to be reviewed
January 21st, 2011 by Mike VasilindaThe 1996 Jimmy Ryce Act, named after a raped and murdered Miami nine year-old, allows authorities to keep offenders locked up after their sentences expire, if they are still deemed to be a danger to society. Today, the Florida Supreme Court ordered a hearing into how the state is carrying out the law. There are concerns inmates are not receiving required treatment. Jimmy’s father, Don Ryce says proper funding of the law is essential.
“If we don’t do that, if we try to do it on a shoestring budget and not do what has to be done, the alternative is the law may be taken away from us, that form of protection,” Don Ryce said. “It will let an awful lot of very dangerous people out on the streets.”
The High court ordered the hearing in the case of a South Florida man who has been waiting in prison for eight-and-a-half years.
